This is the story of Fredrik and Ingela, a Swedish couple and the first foreign family I helped achieve their dream of owning a home in Italy. They were already in love with Lake Iseo, knew the area well, and wanted to put down roots here. But turning that dream into reality was not so simple.
Their Main Challenges:
- They struggled to find a real estate agent who spoke English and could guide them properly.
- They didn’t speak Italian and had no local contacts.
- The bank refused to open an account for them because they didn’t speak Italian, making the entire process even more complicated.
How I Helped Them Achieve Their Dream
I still remember the first time I spoke with them. They were full of enthusiasm but also had many doubts. They wanted someone they could trust, who would accompany them every step of the way. And that’s exactly what I did.
- I personally accompanied Fredrik and Ingela during the house visit, experiencing every moment alongside them. As they explored each room, I described every detail, helping them picture their new life there. I told them about the history of the area, the opportunities it offered, and all the activities they could enjoy nearby, making their vision feel more real.
- I helped them open a bank account, solving what had seemed like an insurmountable obstacle.
- I had the preliminary contract translated and supported them through every bureaucratic step.
- I found a notary with an interpreter to ensure complete clarity and transparency.
- After the purchase, I assisted them with setting up utilities and managing their home.
- Even today, I remain their trusted point of contact for any needs when they are not in Italy.
A Fun (and Stressful) Adventure: The Ikea Incident
I will never forget the frantic trip to Ikea! We had arranged to meet to complete the utility transfers when Fredrik suddenly realized he had left his wallet—containing all his documents and credit cards—in the Ikea food court.
We spent the entire drive trying in vain to reach the store’s call center while rushing toward Brescia, fearing the worst. Then, finally, the good news: the security team had noticed it and kept it safe. A Swedish man saved in a Swedish store—only at Ikea!
A Friendship Beyond Real Estate
What started as a professional relationship has now blossomed into a wonderful friendship. Whether it’s enjoying a Swedish dinner at their lake home or sharing a pizza when they visit Italy, these moments are something I truly cherish. Their journey to owning a home in Italy brought us together, but the bond we have built goes far beyond that.
A Journey Built on Trust
Seeing their joy when they finally took possession of their home on the lake was a moment I will never forget. This was not just a real estate transaction; it was a journey built on trust, emotions, and dreams coming true.
Does This Sound Like the Type of Support You Need?
If so, then contact me. I can’t wait to support you in making your Italian dream a reality!
The best help we could have received when buying our house in Italy! During our purchase, we learned that the real estate agent often works for both parties, which made us feel uncertain throughout the process. The agent brought in a notary and surveyor, and everything seemed serious, but the process took time, and we didn’t feel completely at ease until we moved in. Thankfully, we received incredible support from Barbara and her service, Your House in Italy. She started this because she’s exceptionally skilled at helping. We didn’t know a single word of Italian when we bought the house, yet Barbara made the entire journey so much easier and stress-free. Her guidance was invaluable, and we are forever grateful for her dedication and expertise.
